Abstract

Early childhood development is a dynamic process, which requires positive interactions with context variables, which are related to social, economic and affective security. In the quest to guarantee child development in a healthy way, the public policy Primeira Infância Melhor (PIM) was implemented, aimed at supporting families during this period of their life cycle. This study analyzed the relationships between sociodemographic variables, child socio-affective development profiles and the family characteristics of users included in the PIM, considering the families registered during the period from 2017 to 2019, in Porto Alegre/RS. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional and analytical-correlational study, in which data from registration forms were used. Based on family relationships and the children's responses to the PIM interventions, associations were made and three socio-affective performance profiles were constructed, which describe the characteristics of families associated with the child's levels: satisfactory, average and unsatisfactory. It was found that only 17% of the children had average or unsatisfactory performance levels, making it possible to consider probable protective effects against the precarious socioeconomic conditions in which the families found themselves. The policy study also highlighted the importance of healthy parenting practices, as well as reading and storytelling in childhood, reinforcing the need to invest in caregivers.
