Abstract

The main role of primary health care professionals in the infants’ consultations is to orientate caregivers toward health recommendations, considering the diversity of cultural knowledge in the territories. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the perception of professionals about their role in providing orientations to caregivers and their respective impacts, in the context of Primary Health Care in southern Brazil. Online interviews were carried out with 12 health professionals from four primary health care centers, which were analyzed through a psychoanalytic reading. Professionals' orientations were aligned with a biomedical perspective of homogenization of knowledge, since they tried to exclude care practices and ways of existence that were dissonant to the model idealized and legitimized by public policies and local culture. However, due to the power of the caregivers' knowledge, the orientations had little impact on the population, which promoted negative effects on professionals and resulted in more verticalized health practices in the infants’ consultations.
