Abstract

Objective: to investigate the association between sex and attempted suicide by poisoning. Methods: For this, a population of people reported for self-harm violence was defined in Bahia, in 2018 and 2019. A descriptive, stratified bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed, based on sex as the main independent variable and female as the risk stratum, poisoning as a means of suicide attempt as a dependent variable and age and area of residence as covariates of interest. Results: Female sex increased the odds of attempted suicide by poisoning, compared to men (OR 2,08). No confounders or effect modifiers were identified. Conclusion: Suicide in women needs more studies to understand prevention, in light of the suffering caused by the imposition of gender roles.
