Abstract

Parenting motivations are the basis of reproductive decision-making. This theoretical study aims to describe and analyze the approaches that explain reproductive choices, as well as the inclusion or exclusion of motivations for parenting, in these theoretical models. For this, the information was organized around three axes: the first describes the pioneering theories of motivations for parenting such as the psychodynamic approach, the macro theory of fertility, the theory of child demand and the cost-benefit model, the second describes the theoretical and empirically, contemporary studies of reproductive behavior such as: the theory of self-determination, the theory of planned behavior, the theory of conjectural action and the model motivations-desires-intentions-behaviors. Finally, the third makes a comparative analysis of contemporary theories. It is concluded that there are several theoretical models that try to explain reproductive decision-making. Some approaches focus on macro theories of motivation or contextual analyses, while others take a broader view, considering hereditary, individual and contextual factors, framing the motivation to have children in a broader reproductive decision-making process.
