Abstract

Stress is a psychophysiological state of wear and tear that is central to the field of health and psychopathology. Symptoms of various mental disorders, including anxiety and depression, are integrated into clinical stress in a complex way. The purpose of this study is to analyze stress symptoms based on the Network Analysis method, using data from the review survey of the validity, accuracy and updating of norms of the Inventory of Stress Symptoms for adults by Lipp. Data from 4,500 participants from the Brazilian population were analyzed to establish the network's topography, its centrality and stability indices. The results indicated a stable network, with moderate correlations among the 53 symptoms in 3 categories, as predicted, without showing isolated clusters of symptoms. In terms of centrality, a group of five nodes seem to indicate the decisive symptoms for a diagnosis of stress. The network vertex stability index indicated a very stable network (0.75/1). This was confirmed by the Correlation, Sensitivity and Scarcity indices (all > 0.8/1); and the stability of the centrality indices that remain good even with only 40% of the sample used. The results indicate a stable pattern of stress symptoms applicable to a psychological assessment with greater psychometric validity.
