Abstract

The World Health Organization considers addressing the spiritual needs of patients facing a serious, progressive, and incurable illness as an intrinsic aspect of best practices in palliative care. However, the majority of palliative care services in Brazil do not have a qualified professional in their multidisciplinary team to fulfill this role. Such a professional would be responsible for addressing issues related to the spiritual dimension of the patients, such as assessing spiritual suffering, identifying predictors of treatment impact, and providing professional spiritual care to patients, families, and the palliative care team. The field of religious studies and theology has the potential to take a leading role in interdisciplinary dialogue with health care sciences, in promoting theoretical-practical proposals and conducting in-depth investigations on issues related to spiritual care in the health field. This essay aims to contribute by presenting a detailed proposal for spiritual care known as the "Diamond Model." Originally created to address the spiritual needs of patients in the context of palliative care, this model is a useful and adaptable tool for other scenarios requiring spiritual care for individuals "with" and "without" religious beliefs.
