Abstract

This his study offers an exegesis of Mal 1:6-14 with a view to understanding its meaning within the context of the Persian period. Drawing on the text's literary structure, it seeks to highlight the tension between the maintenance of traditional theology and the need to reinterpret it in light of new historical circumstances. The prophet Malachi, in denouncing careless worship and unworthy offerings, confronts the priests in particular, reminding them that authentic worship demands reverence, integrity, and a living covenant with God. The analysis shows that the text revisits central elements of Israelite theology—such as the theology of YHWH's "name" and the image of "YHWH as king"—but reinterprets them critically, highlighting the inconsistency between what is believed about God and what is manifested in worship. From this perspective, Mal 1:6-14 is understood as a process of updating and inculturation, in which the biblical message is inserted into a new context without breaking with the spiritual and cultural roots of the people. The prophet demonstrates that the one who can rightly be called a "great king" and whose name is "great and feared among the nations" cannot be appeased with unworthy offerings, even from a simple provincial governor (1:8). The contemporary application of this principle challenges faith communities to revise their liturgical practices, ensuring that they are a true expression of life before God and not a mere ritual formality.
