Abstract

In 539 BCE, Cyrus the Great made a triumphal entry into the city of Babylon and proclaimed himself its new king, in token of which he made the rounds of the local sanctuaries to pay his respects. With the apparent approval of the local god Bel, the city and with it the entire Babylonian Empire passed into the hands of the new master. It was the beginning of the Persian era. More than two hundred years later, in 333 BCE, Alexander the Great would defeat Darius III in the battle at Issus and bring an end to the Persian hegemony. But for two long centuries, the peoples of the Near East would be living in a world where the Persians ruled. No one could ignore their presence. The empire change was also the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Israelite religion.
