Abstract

This article analyzes Galatians 1:1–5, focusing on the implicit presence of messianic hope and its role in Paul’s apocalyptic theology. Through detailed exegesis and structural analysis, it argues that the opening greeting functions as a liturgical declaration summarizing Paul’s gospel: the liberation from the “present evil age” through the self-giving of the Messiah. The pericope anticipates the key themes developed throughout the letter, especially the contrast between the logic of divine gift and the legalistic obligation system. The study shows how Paul reinterprets sacrificial language as an expression of divine gratuity and deliverance from the powers of the old space-time order. Hope is presented not only as an eschatological expectation but also as an existential and ethical reality in the present. Moreover, the article reflects on the political and social implications of this theology in opposition to both Roman imperial ideology and Mosaic legalism. It concludes that Galatians 1:1–5, far from being a mere formal introduction, offers a theological synopsis of Paul’s message of grace, freedom, and the new creation inaugurated in the Messiah.
