Abstract

According to Jo 4:5, Jesus went to a city in Samaria, close to the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Most textual testimonies say that this city was called Sychar, and a small number say thar it was called Shechem. Sychar is mentioned, in the Bible, only in this verse, while Shechem is mentioned several times. Initially, the working methodology, typical of textual criticism, will be the presentation of textual testimonies for each reading. Next, we will see how some authors worked in these readings until reaching proposals for understanding entire pericope, whether from the Sychar reading or from the Shechem reading. As a result, it will be shown how the Shechem reading fits into the controversies between Jews and Samaritans and can go back to material from early Samaritan Christianity, underlying both the Gospel according to John and the Acts of the Apostles.
