Abstract

Ernesto Theóphilo Schlieper was one of the most influential figures in the consolidation of the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil (IECLB) in its process of becoming national, both in the sense of assuming itself as a Brazilian church, and in its articulation in different regions of the country; in its ecumenical openness; and in the development of an awareness of its social responsibility. Through bibliographical and documentary analysis, this article aims to reflect on the development of Brazilian Lutheranism in its relationship with the national and international ecumenical movement and its openness to the reflection on issues specific to public life in Brazil and its social challenges. With an attentive reading to the text "The Church and its social responsibility", by Ernesto Schlieper, the Lutheran church is located in its theological, religious, institutional and socio-political context in the 1950s and 1960s. From a historical perspective, the general lines of the public theology produced by Schlieper are presented in relation to the issues specific to Brazilian Lutheranism, the ecumenism of his time, and his European theological heritage.
