Abstract

The pericope of Is 45:1-7 provides a re-reading of YHWH's sovereignty in the midst of exile, in the midst of chaos. YHWH continues to reign and have hegemony, even when his people are banished and scattered. Now he uses the messiah Cyrus, whose fame and success are attributed to YHWH, as an instrument of salvation. This is not in vain, but because of his chosen people: Israel. YHWH is sovereign over all creation and over everyone, due to his uniqueness and autonomous omnipotence.
