Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF.

  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.

  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be submitted online in .DOC format, Times New Roman font, size 12, spacing 1.5, with continuous numbering of lines. All margins should be set to 3 cm, A4 page size and pages numbered sequentially. The submitted manuscript (with main document plus supplementary documents, such as figures and tables) may contain up to 50 thousand characters (with spaces).

First page

Must contain the title in Portuguese, in bold, font size 14, centralized. Below, present the title in English, in italics, font size 12, centralized. Titles should be concise and direct, clearly reflecting the theme of the research. Mentions to genera and species should be followed by their authors and years of description, and by the indication of more inclusive linear categories in parentheses. For example: Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 (Hymenoptera: Apidae). Tillandsia usneoides L. (Bromeliaceae).

Below the titles must be the names of the authors, complemented by a lowercase letter (superscript, between brackets [a]), indicating, in the following lines, the educational degree, institutional affiliation and e-mail. It is necessary to add the professional address of one of the authors.

Second page

Abstract in Portuguese and English

The text should be edited, without bibliographical references, in a single paragraph. At the end of the abstract, cite up to five keywords to the authors' choice, in alphabetical order, separated by period, not repeating words from the title.

Abstracts in Portuguese and English should contain between 100 and 250 words each, presenting the approach, objectives and context of the study proposal, with results and conclusions. Abstracts must be in italic.

Third and subsequent pages

Introduction

It should situate the universe in which the research is inserted and point out, in a concise manner, the purpose of the research. The introduction should not include data or conclusions, but present in a clear and objective way the initial question that originated the study, the hypotheses, the objectives and the justification.

Material and methods

This section should offer information that allows the study to be replicated by other researchers. Refer bibliographically the techniques used.

Results

They should offer a concise description of the new findings, with little personal opinion and, with sporadic exceptions, without reference to third-party data.

Cite figures, tables and tables in the body text in ascending numerical order.

Cite numbers and units as follows:

- Numbers up to nine should be quoted in full unless if them are followed by units of measure or indicate numbering of figures or tables.

- Separate the value’s units by a space (except for percentages or for geographical coordinates).

- For compound units, use exponentiation, not bars (e.g. mg × day-1, not mg/day).

- For more complex formulas, use Equation, a tool present in Microsoft Word itself.

Discussion

It is intend to analyze the results and relate them to the existing knowledge, especially those that were indicated previously in the introduction. This part should be presented separately from the results and should be based on recent and valuable theoretical foundations.

Exceptionally, results and discussion can be on a single topic as long as it is properly justified.

Conclusion or Final Considerations

They should be limited to the purpose of new discoveries by relating them to existing knowledge. Use quotes only when they are indispensable.

Acknowledgments (optional item)

They should be concise.

References

Scientific notes, case reports, reviews, essays and reviews

Scientific notes, case reports, revisions, essays and reviews will be accepted only by invitation or approval of the editorial board. Scientific notes and case reports should contain a maximum of 10,000 characters (with spaces), with the same sections as the full article. Revisions, essays and reviews should contain title, authors, abstract in Portuguese, keywords in Portuguese, abstract in English, keywords in English, arguments and references.

Illustrations

Illustrations (figures and graphics) should be limited to the minimum, presented in the body text and submitted in separate files, in .jpg or .tiff format, with a minimum resolution of 300 DPI, identified and consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals. Figures that exceed the established size or have poor graphics quality will not be accepted. Whenever is possible and relevant, the illustrations should be arranged in block with proportional size of 17 x 22 cm. Captions should be placed below the illustrations and contain the origin of the information. Authors should pay attention to the size of the fonts, since the images can be reduced during the editing process. The colored illustrations will be available only in the online version of the journal.

Charts and tables

Charts and tables must be composed with resources of the text editor itself, identified and consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals, and presented in the body of the text. Do not present the same data in figure and table either repeat them in the text. In the configuration of the tables, it is suggested to follow the standards of tabular presentation (IBGE, 1993) and the international system of metric units (INMETRO, 2007) for the measures and abbreviations of the units. Never insert vertical lines or fill cells.

Scientific names

The first time scientific names of genera and species are cited in the text must be written in full, without abbreviations and accompanied by the author's name, date of original description, as well as the families to which they belong. After the first mention, the genre name can be abbreviated, except if it is at the beginning of sentences.

In taxonomic studies, at the end of the section Material and Methods, present citations of material examined, containing at least the acronyms of the institution in which the biological material is registered, the number of tipping, the State, the municipality and the local of collection, according to the following model: BRAZIL. Paraná: Lapa, Grotto of the Monge, 23-XII-2008. R. Kersten 1725 (HUCP, MBM).

Citations and References

References should follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style; for non-exemplified situations, please refer to the manual. We recommend using tools such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

In citation throughout the text, follow the author-date schema. The authors cited in the text should be with only the first letter of the name in capital letters; the author's surnames should be separated by 'and' when they are part of the text and by '&' when within parentheses: Moura-Leite and Bernarde (1998) / (Moura-Leite & Bernarde, 1998).

In citations with two to five authors, cite all for the first mention and then only the first followed by the Latin expression 'et al.' (Without italic and followed by dot); when they are outside the text, citations should be listed in chronological order, separating authors from years of publication by ',' and different authors for ';' (Abilhoa et al., 2004; Fischer, 2007, 2008; Kersten, 2010). Studies with author and date matching, add lower case letters, without spaces, separated by ',' (Kersten et al., 2009a, b).

In the references, follow the alphabetical and chronological order of authors. Authors must be separated by a comma, except the last, which must be separated by '&'. In references with more than six authors, indicate the first six and add the expression 'et al.' from the seventh. Names of journal or titles of books and thesis should be written in full and italics. The paragraph must be justified with the second line indented to the third character.
