Low-cost treatment of notoedric mange in shelter cats

Abstract

Notoedric mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by the mite Notoedres sp. Although cats are the most susceptible to infection, rodents, lakes, and humans can become infected. It is a very common disease in shelters, as it is transmitted through direct contact between animals. Currently, the drugs prescribed for treating notoedric mange in cats are expensive and incompatible with the reality of management shelter cats. This article describes the low-cost and successful treatment of a cat with Notoedres sp. and her 63 contacts from a cat shelter in the city of Uberlândia – Minas Gerais, using ivermectin subcutaneously.
