Resumen

This article will discuss the racial issues and white privilege with structuring concepts of Brazilian society and their implications for the formation of the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil (IECLB) between the years 1824 and 1942. To this end, the theoretical-analytical framework of whiteness will be used. In this way, it will shed light on the privileges granted to white European immigrants throughout the process of formation of Brazilian society, after Independence, Proclamation of the Republic until the nationalization campaign of the Estado Novo and Novo and Brazil’s participation in the Second World War. In this period, white people were seen as token of development and Black and Indigenous people were considered responsible for Brazil's backwardness. In this scenario of privileges for white people, the first Lutheran communities were founded and contributed to the colonization of the South Region and Espírito Santo. In this sense, in Brazil, Lutheranism is marked by ethnic belonging, the preservation of Germannes and white privilege. Therefore, the challenge of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brazil is to become a multiethnic church, denounce racism as a sin and begin a process of anti-racist struggle to truly become a church in Brazil without having to give up its confessional identity.
