Abstract

This research aims to show how the Judahites religious imagination of the post-Babylonian exile was greatly influenced by Persian/Achaemenid ideology. We outline some of the most relevant influences: the change in the concept of God, from a close God who walks with His people, to a distant and inaccessible God of heaven, similar to the Persian king; the relevance of angels in the important role of intermediating between the people and God, who will also have a court with its counselors, much like the Persian court; the change in the function of the Torah, from a set of instructions used by parents to educate their children and by priests to guide the people, to a code of laws aimed at judging and punishing, similar to Persian law; the importance of the sacred fire of Persian religion for the manifestation of God; the significance of Cyrus the Great for the concept of Messiah, both in the Jewish and Christian worlds; the similarity between the mission of the Egyptian priest Udjahorresnet, in service to the Persian kings, and the mission of the priest and scribe Ezra. The methodology to be used will be the analysis of biblical texts, as well as recent biblical and extrabiblical research.
