Resumo

This article presents the results of a study aimed at understanding how members of an educational community perceive Romani students and their relationship with the school. This qualitative study was conducted in a public school in Guapó (GO), through semi-structured interviews with six teachers, two pedagogical coordinators and three gypsy mothers. The content analysis revealed multiple challenges to school inclusion, such as the lack of knowledge of gypsy culture on the part of education professionals, the invisibility of students, school infrequency, the reproduction of stereotypes and discriminatory practices, and the fragility of the bond between school and family. It is concluded that the realization of the right to education for gypsy children in the early years of elementary school requires intercultural training of professionals working in the school, the implementation of specific public policies and the development of pedagogical practices that value cultural diversity. "Only through an approach that acknowledges the identities of the Romani people, confronts discriminatory practices, and fosters a school environment that promotes belonging, active listening, and mutual respect will it be possible to ensure that schools fulfill their role as spaces of learning and social justice for Romani children, who have been historically marginalized in the Brazilian educational landscape.
