This paper presents a study aimed at analysing the process of verticalisation of teaching work at a Federal Institute of Education (IF), based on the policy for the implementation of the Federal Network for Scientific and Technological Vocational Education (Law No. 11.892/2008), which provides for verticalised teaching at IFs. Within the scope of the research, priority was given to issues relating to the meaning(s) attributed by teachers to the new forms imposed by the regulation of verticalised teaching, considering what these effectively entail for teaching work and, in particular, the way in which teachers implement this policy at the IF. Of a qualitative nature, the research draws its main data from (auto)biographical narratives of eight lecturers at the institution under investigation (IF-I) who joined and have been working there since the implementation of the RFEPCT in 2008. The analysis process was based on content analysis, comprising the following phases: 1) pre-analysis; 2) exploration of the material and data processing; 3) inference and interpretation. In the analysis of the interpretation and translation of the teachers’ narratives regarding the meaning(s) attributed to the teaching role they perform at the institution under investigation, a “performativity” was noted, established in the “implementation of policy”, in the face of the verticalised teaching system established by law under the RFEPCT. In this way, ‘politics in action’ is constructed and (re)constructed, focusing on how individuals ‘make’ politics through their actual teaching practice – that is, through the ‘implementation of policy’ – giving rise to what the research refers to as the process of verticalisation of teaching work at IF-I, since it is observed that teaching precedes and brings about verticalised teaching at the IF; therefore, the implementation of policy by teachers promotes the verticalisation of teaching at IF-I.
