Resumo

This article presents the results of research conducted during a research internship abroad as part of a sandwich doctorate program at the University of Extremadura (Badajoz, Spain), funded by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). The overall objective of this article is to present a mapping of Spanish research and to explain how it has described research methodologies with children, using arithmetic thinking as a reference. The data was produced from a mapping of doctoral theses defended between 2014 and 2023 available in two repositories: Teseo (a system of the Ministry of Universities) and Dialnet Plus, maintained by the University of La Rioja (UNIRIOJA). The theoretical framework discusses arithmetic thinking in the early years of schooling, as well as the theoretical and methodological influences on children's mathematical development and learning. In terms of results, identifying the theses enabled methodological reflection on new approaches. It inspired the development of specific data-collection instruments for use in the doctoral research entitled “Psychogenesis of Mathematical Learning: psychopedagogical reflections on the arithmetic field in the early years,” linked to the Postgraduate Program in Education (PPGE) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar).
