It began in the year 2008 with the aim of disseminating original research works aimed at the Administration area - focusing on Strategy, directed to researchers, students, teachers and professionals in related areas. https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25266 Environmental determinism and strategic choice in a small family business 2019-05-15T15:16:57-03:00 Michele Raasch [email protected] Elvis Silveira-Martins [email protected] Camila Cabrera Gomes [email protected]
The goal of this paper is to analyze the strategic change and adaptation process of a small family business in Rio Grande do Sul throughout its trajectory, defining each strategic period according to the Hrebiniak and Joyce (1985) model. Longitudinal data analysis in small businesses help understand where the organizational changes come from, resulting from the organizational adaptation process. The study analysis covered the period between 1987 and October 2017. The needed information was collected through a semi-structured interview with the founder and the current manager. As a result, the different strategical periods by which the organization has passed were noted. Also noted, the strategical adaptation process was given by determinism at first, and as time passed, the adaptations through strategic choice were more regular.
2023-03-14T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019 https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25277 The contextual factors behind CEO duality: an empirical analysis of Brazil's case 2019-05-15T15:20:19-03:00 Elisa Maria Moser [email protected] Paulo Vitor Jordão da Gama Silva [email protected] Fernando Nascimento Oliveira [email protected] Michael Espindola Araki [email protected]
Our econometric analyses used logistic regression to test the relation between CEO duality, a dummy variable equal to one if there is duality and 0 otherwise with independent variables regarding firm characteristics (firm age, size and economic sector), corporate governance (ownership structure, CEO age and governance level), and firm economic and financial performance. Our sample consisted of a balanced panel of 160 Brazilian publicly traded companies listed on B3 S.A., with data from 2010 to 2016. Our results indicate that CEO duality was positively related with higher CEO age and superior financial performance. Conversely, CEO duality was negatively related with firm size, belonging to special listing segments, belonging to regulated sectors, board size and foreign capital ownership. Our results are robust to different specifications and different econometric techniques.
2019-04-27T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019 https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25325 Environmental determinism and strategic choice in a small family business 2019-05-15T15:20:19-03:00 Michele Raasch [email protected] Elvis Silveira-Martins [email protected] Camila Cabrera Gomes [email protected]
The goal of this paper is to analyze the strategic change and adaptation process of a small family business in Rio Grande do Sul throughout its trajectory, defining each strategic period according to the Hrebiniak and Joyce (1985) model. Thus, in order to increase their profits, companies need to be as good at attracting new customers as they are to retain the customers they have already won. Researchers point out that, by avoiding even small defection from customers to competitors, companies can avoid declines in profitability and even increase it. In this scenario, the objective of this study is to analyze the main elements driving bank clients’ dissatisfaction, as well as to evaluate the influence of dissatisfaction on bank customers’ defection. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that it focuses on the study of bank customers defection and its consequence for the company’s profits. For this purpose, we used a sample of 257 individuals who had some type of dissatisfaction, in the last 18 months, with banking institutions where they maintain or maintained their main account, in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The sample was of non-probabilistic type and was chosen by convenience. Data collection was done through the application of a structured questionnaire, using the Survey method, and Likert scale, ranging from 1 to 7. By the results, price and service recovery have no influence on either dissatisfaction or defection. The results pointed to service failures and inconvenience as the main elements that cause customer dissatisfaction, with a direct influence, along with competitors’ attractiveness, on the customer defection in the banking sector. As academic contribution, we may cite the identification and measurement of the main drivers of dissatisfaction and defection in the banking sector. This is an unusual nomologic network, less studied in academic terms.
2019-04-27T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019 https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25268 Measuring value creation for stakeholders: a contribution from the empirical research 2019-05-15T15:20:19-03:00 Sidnei da Col Brito [email protected] Daniel Augusto Fazoli [email protected]
This paper aims to contribute with the growing discussions among value creation through the lens of stakeholder theory. Starting from an important gap identified in previous studies, according to what improved methods are needed to measure value creation for stakeholders, this research employed a systematic review of the literature with the main objective of providing a full set of metrics for stakeholders’ value creation based on reviewing the literature composed of articles drawn with an empirical quantitative method, and then suggests a new approach to measure value creation for stakeholders based on filling the gaps identified. Through the results is possible to see how many different ways to measure value creation are being employed by scholars, what can be a result of the challenge already discussed in the literature about what means “value” for each stakeholder group. Despite, it was possible to see that value still much related to the monetary value - financial return for shareholders, remuneration for employees, and product’s price for customers. Few metrics are used for intangible values, whose importance as value drivers from a utilitarian point of view had already been highlighted in the literature. The analysis performed and gaps identified opened space to suggest a different set of indicators to measure the value created for primary stakeholders, taking their different value drivers in account. These results shed some light on the academic discussions, showing scholars new variables that can be added in their researches in order to have a better picture of the whole stakeholder value creation system, and has also practical implications for managers, whose challenge is creating as much value as possible for all their company’s stakeholders.
2019-04-27T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019 https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25269 Academic performance and investments in federal institutes of education in the Brazilian Northeast 2019-05-15T15:20:19-03:00 Marilia Souto Matsumoto [email protected] Sheila Silva Albuquerque [email protected] Luciana Peixoto Santa Rita [email protected] Ibsen Santana Pinto [email protected]
The creation of the Federal Network of Professional and Technological Education, as a public policy of education, resulted in the expansion of technical-technological education in Brazil and led to an exponential increase of resources applied to them. In this context, the Federal Audit Court established academic indicators that express the expansion of supply and the improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the federal institutions of professional education. In order to monitor organizational performance and evaluate results regarding the allocation of material and human resource. The aim of this study was investigating the relationship between the Graduates Efficiency Rate and other established indicators, discussing whether the performance evaluation model reflects the complexity of these institutions and measures their performance as public policy. As for the methodology, the research was quanti-qualitative. After a bibliographical research, a documentary analysis of the data available in the Management Reports of the Federal Institutions of Education of the Northeast Region was performed, from the period between 2012 and 2016. The indicators available in these documents were compared in statistical treatment software, in evaluating the results, the various organizational issues involved in the process. The results show that there is no relation between the Academic Efficiency Rate of Graduates and the other management indicators established by the TCU. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a performance evaluation model that advances the study of the elements that reflect the complexity of these institutions.
2019-04-27T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019 https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25270 Corporate Social Responsibility: dissemination of bahian companies in the global compact 2019-05-15T15:20:19-03:00 Juamilly Sena Lomes [email protected] Tânia Cristina Azevedo [email protected]
It is pertinent to know the socio-environmental support initiatives carried out in the international sphere that correspond to the responsibilities of the corporate environment. The objective of the study was to verify how the Bahians companies that make up the Global Compact are demonstrating Corporate Social Responsibility. This is a descriptive investigation with an explanatory approach and qualitative characteristics in terms of its approach, as it focused on the description and explanation of the CSR actions and practices of the Bahians companies that make up this initiative. The research presents a limited number of active Bahians companies participating in this initiative. On the other hand, the organizations that make up the United Nations Global Compact have been observing elements that, based on CSR commitments, for example aspects of the deadline for reporting, are also developing efforts to incorporate actions in activities that are aligned with the RSC. However, in the section on transparency through disclosure on the website, it can be seen that in most of the companies investigated, the disclosure is not in line with what is available in the Global Compact platform.
2019-04-27T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019 https://periodicos.pucpr.br/REBRAE/article/view/25264 Editorial 2019-05-15T15:20:19-03:00 Vilmar Rodrigues Moreira [email protected] 2019-04-27T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2019
